In 1928 , Willard Ray Custer an aeronautical engineer got an idea to create a technology Channel Wing . He realized that a coop roof is easily lifted when the wind is blowing strongly. After doing some experiments he found that the lift is produced when air passes through an arch -shaped object . CCW 1942 - 1 prototype was built and it only requires a 61-meter track and a minimum speed of 32 kilometers per hour to fly to the air . Six years later CCW - 2 is produced and it only requires a 20 meter runway to fly ! His invention got the attention of NASA that then do their own tests and experiment . The channel aircraft wing is good for an aircraft requiring a very short runway , but there are some problems. First of all this is difficult to control while flying because of the aircraft's wing design produced such a powerful vibration at high speeds. High air friction wing channel also makes it not economical . In addition, this aircraft requires high air flow at all times to remain flying. If one of the plane 's engine is not functioning, the plane will crash due to loss of lift on the wings. Curved wing does not have wings like a conventional aerofoil design . Without the engine to produce the high velocity of air in it , the channel wing is useless.
Willard Ray Custer continued to produce the Channel Wing aircraft until 1964 . His wing channel technology may not transform the aeronautical world, but it was still the coolest designs and different from the others .
